Trouble with AdBlue, EGR, SCR, NOx... - workshop visits, invoices with a constantly increasing final amount... - who doesn't know that?

A nice greeting from the engine warning light, the reminder to fill up with AdBlue, the fear of no longer being able to start the engine because the electronics switch to emergency mode and prevent it from starting again, error messages such as “poor AdBlue quality”, – all of this, and much more, is increasingly clouding everyday driving today.

What is AdBlue?

AdBlue - a mixture of around two thirds demineralized water and one third urea, is injected into the exhaust system in the titanium-coated so-called SCR catalytic converter at exhaust gas temperatures above 170 °C. The mixture reduces NOx emissions by converting the NOx into nitrogen and water.
In the diesel scandal it became known that automobile companies had installed an SCR switch-off device that only switched on the NOx control on the chassis dynamometer, but switched it off in road traffic in order to compensate for the increased fuel consumption caused by the NOx reduction measures.

What does SCR mean?

The abbreviation SCR stands for Selective Catalytic Reduction, the treatment of exhaust gases in connection with ADBlue to convert nitrogen oxides (NOx) into water (steam) (H2O) and nitrogen (N2).

What does EGR stand for?

AGR means exhaust gas recirculation (EGR – Exhaust Gas Recirculation) and is also responsible for reducing NOx values.
With diesel engines, this process is a balancing act, as fewer exhaust gases are allowed to be recirculated during acceleration in order to avoid soot formation. Since this cannot be achieved mechanically with the speed that would be required, complementary processes such as SCR are used.

The location can rarely be chosen arbitrarily, because charging infrastructure is not available, functional or the space is not available everywhere.
