Victron – Multiplus II – inverter defective?

Reading time 2 minutes

The inverter Victron Multiplus II is offered in different performance and battery variants. What they all have in common is that they have a mechanical on/off switch, which not only serves as a switch but also as a selector switch for the operating mode.

  • 0 = switched off
  • 1 = Charging and inverter operation switched on
  • 2 = Charging mode switched on, inverter mode switched off

You might think that this would be easy after all: just put the switch in the desired position and everything is fine. Not at all!

Settings in the Victron Cerbo GX

Anyone who has such an inverter will also have installed other Victron components, such as MPPT controller, possibly. Lynx shunt, etc. and ultimately the entire installation using the Cerbo GX Touch Panels monitor and control.

The Cerbo GX Touch Panel offers access to all connected systems in the menu, including the Victron Multiplus II.

Under menuSettingsMultiplus II Switch The following functional variants can be selected:

  • Out of
  • Load on only
  • Inverter on only
  • A

These settings overwrite the switch position on the device!

If the “charging only mode” is selected, the inverter will not start operating under any circumstances.

The Victron Multiplus II So it's not defective, it just depends on what the settings on the Cerbo GX Touch Panel pretend.

It is advisable to only choose inverter operation if it can be ruled out that power-hungry consumers, such as electric heaters or induction cookers, can become active in order to prevent premature battery discharge. For example, with a shore power connection in order to manage short-term (!) power outages without interruption or - assuming there is good sunshine - to prepare the rolls in the hot air oven (max. 1,600 W) for 18 minutes or in the fully automatic coffee machine (max. intermittently 1,400 W) for 5 minutes ) or to cook the 8-minute eggs in the egg cooker (300 W) to perfection, or to toast the toast in 3 minutes (930 W) until golden.

In other words: anything that only requires a few minutes of higher power can be implemented on the go with inverter operation.
