WordPress has been developed as a free content management system (CMS) since 2003. It is currently used by over 42% of all websites, currently in version 6.1.

Posts can be categorized, tagged and commented, users can be assigned different rights, and posts and pages can be placed online with password protection.
Over 55,000 plugins, some of which are free, expand the range of functions in any direction, including a shop system with payment functions.
The integration of social media is also a given.

Themes, both free and paid, represent the individual design and appearance of the website. At least one parent theme is required to run a WordPress site.
Child themes individualize parent themes by extending them with individual functions.
Since 2022, block-based themes have also been implemented, which enable design changes related to the respective text block via the so-called Gutenberg editor.
Parent, child and block-based themes are validated by a consortium of WordPress developers. Third-party providers are responsible for the compatibility and updates of their theme offerings.
