Hans familj levde under enkla f\u00f6rh\u00e5llanden.<br>Fadern <em>Xaver<\/em> war Weber, modern <em>Rosina<\/em> tog hand om de m\u00e5nga barnen. Som vanligt i lantliga arbetarfamiljer p\u00e5 den tiden hj\u00e4lpte Sebastian till tidigt, som herdepojke och v\u00e4varhj\u00e4lpare \u2013 skolundervisning var n\u00e4stan ot\u00e4nkbar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trots detta f\u00f6ljde han envist \u00f6nskan att bli pr\u00e4st. Vid 23 \u00e5rs \u00e5lder, d\u00e5 kaplanen hade m\u00f6jlighet <em>Matthias Merkle<\/em> den sena intr\u00e4det i gymnasiet, och Kneipp hann ikapp det som andra hade l\u00e4rt sig som barn. Fr\u00e5n 1848 studerade han teologi i Dillingen och M\u00fcnchen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under studierna insjuknade han i tuberkulos. I s\u00f6kandet efter lindring st\u00f6tte han p\u00e5 en skrift av l\u00e4karen <em>Johann Siegemund Hahn<\/em>, som tillskrev kallvattenbehandlingar en helande effekt. Kneipp provade metoden p\u00e5 sig sj\u00e4lv, med bad i Donau, och tillskrev sin \u00e5terh\u00e4mtning denna praktik. 1852 pr\u00e4stvigdes han.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Efter n\u00e5gra \u00e5r som kaplan kom han 1855 som biktfader till dominikanklostret i W\u00f6rishofen. D\u00e4r utvecklade han sina vattenbehandlingar vidare och behandlade allt fler sjuka fr\u00e5n omgivningen. Tillstr\u00f6mningen \u00f6kade stadigt, och fr\u00e5n 1880-talet utvecklades Bad W\u00f6rishofen till en v\u00e4lk\u00e4nd kurort. Kneipp blev pr\u00e4st 1881 och utn\u00e4mndes till monsignore 1889.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Han avled den 17 juni 1897 vid en \u00e5lder av 76 \u00e5r.
