For masks without a valve, the permitted wearing time is 75 minutes followed by a break of at least 30 minutes. With the valve, the wearing time is extended to 120 minutes with the same break time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Up to three intervals may be carried out during a work shift, up to a maximum of five times per week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Masks with the marking <em>R<\/em> (reusable) may be used again beyond one work shift. When dealing with radioactive or airborne biological substances, such as bacteria, mold or viruses, these masks may only be used for the duration of one shift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Mit_oder_ohne_Ausatemventil\"><\/span>With or without an exhalation valve?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is generally not advisable to wear masks without an exhalation valve, as the CO2 concentration increases within a few minutes due to repeated exhalation and inhalation of the air within the mask space <a href=\"https:\/\/tkp.at\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/ResearchSquare-06-01-2022-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">422 ppm to 14,162 ppm<\/a> increases (study on <a href=\"https:\/\/csiag.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/ResearchSquare-06-01-2022-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Download<\/a>) and this can result in health damage and long-term consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Maskenwahl\"><\/span>Mask choice<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When choosing a dust mask, special attention should be paid to a comfortable but tight fit and high filter performance, ideally with an identifier <em>R<\/em> (reusable) and <em>D<\/em> (suitable for dolomite dust). These offer the highest filter performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are various manufacturers of dust masks. An example is 3M with the FFP3 mask from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rehmshop.de\/3m-8835-atemschutzmaske-ffp3-r-d-mit-cool-flow-ausatemventil-bei-crni-zn.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Type 8835+<\/a> mentioned at about 13 euros \/ piece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is not advisable to purchase masks from unknown manufacturers without a corresponding (and verifiable) test certificate and often at remarkably low prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Kostenersatz_durch_Arbeitgeber\"><\/span>Reimbursement of costs by employers<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lt. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gesetze-im-internet.de\/arbschg\/__3.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a73 ArbSchG<\/a> (Occupational Safety and Health Act) the employer is prohibited (\u00a73(3) ArbSchG) from imposing the costs of occupational safety measures on the employee; he is therefore obliged to cover the costs of occupational safety measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Gesundheitsgefahrdung_durch_Staube\"><\/span>Danger to health from dust<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Various studies demonstrate the risk potential of exposure to dusts, such as building dust, gypsum or crystalline silicon dioxide:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/34302831\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Occupational exposure to particles and increased risk of developing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD): A population-based cohort study in Stockholm, Sweden<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/36012117\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A Scoping Analysis of Cathelicidin in Response to Organic Dust Exposure and Related Chronic Lung Illnesses<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26922875\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Oxidative stress and lung pathology following geogenic dust exposure<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/11072491\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Effect of exposure to dust on lung function of cement factory workers<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/6498112\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Acute lung function response to cotton dust in atopic and non-atopic individuals<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time<\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span>Dust masks are classified as FFP1, FFP2 and FFP3 with ascending filter performance, as well as with and without an exhalation valve.
